School-wide Lesson Study: John Muir Elementary School

John Muir Elementary School, in San Francisco Unified School District, began its school-wide lesson study journey in 2015. Muir School shows up as a “positive outlier” in district scans–a site that has been extraordinarily successful in supporting the achievement of underserved groups.

A Steering Committee, made up of administrators and teacher-leaders from each grade band, coordinates the school-wide lesson study. The Steering Committee responds to the needs of each lesson study team, connecting them to knowledge inside or outside the school.

The Steering Committee helps summarize what’s been learned at the school. The Fishbone Diagram below captures Muir’s emerging knowledge about teaching to support confident, independent learners. It brings together knowledge from research and practice.
